If you are new to League of Legends or have just started watching championships then you might be wondering. Who is this ‘DoubleLift’ person everyone is referring to? You can hear so much about him but there is a good chance that you have never actually seen him play or get interviewed. So you decided to look him up and now you are here. Great choice, you are about to read about the gem of League of Legends the one and only DoubleLift.
Before DoubleLift Became One of the Best Players in League of Legends
DoubleLift has a very extensive history, but it all began in 2011. He joined CLG when “HotshotGG,” noticed his exceptional Blitzcrank gameplay and invited him to play as support on his team. DoubleLift quickly moved on to Epik Gamer in May where he became the group’s support. After that, he also joined Team Curse in July but went right back to CLG in November. This team hopping didn’t do much good for his gaming career, so he decided to stay. He spent 4 years with CLG making a huge name for himself, the team and League of Legends history.
During this time he was pressured to go to college by his family and get a degree that could potentially get him a good job. He refused to listen and focused on gaming, which was not a wise choice back then. The team lost several fights and even when they won they couldn’t give enough money to the players. This is when DoubleLift became homeless. He couldn’t go back to family because he rejected the idea of school and he couldn’t get a job because he didn’t have any kind of degree. He decided to go all-in on his gaming career because that was all he could do which gave him a chance at a good life.
Then came the miracle. He joined Team Solo Mid as an AD carry, replacing Wildturtle. This got him a lot of attention, as Team Solo Mid was one of the most well-known teams and he seemed like an uncanny candidate at the time. But he quickly proved himself, as he helped the group win the NA LCS 2015 Summer Playoffs, which got him the fame he still enjoys today. After that, he continued on to play in Team Liquid, went back to Team Solo Mid shortly after and then again (currently) he is playing for Team Liquid. Right now one can say that he is at the peak of his career but he doesn’t plan to stop. He is confident in himself and will not stop until he wins World’s Championship Finals at least once (or so long as he’s healthy and passionate).
What is DoubleLift Known for?
Besides this unlikely win in 2015 DoubleLift also has many attributes that helped him retain his fame. After all, one simple win wouldn’t have been able to keep his title.
One of them being is that he jokes about his abilities in a very egotistical way back up by his mechanic skillset. Everyone gets this kind of humor and thankfully he doesn’t let his popularity get to his head, therefore is stays funny no matter how much he does it. His most famous sayings are: “I’m the greatest. Everyone else is just trash.” and “Money in the bank, pimpin’ ain’t easy.” 3 simple sentences that showcase his personality and were even printed on T-shirts that became the official merch of this player. But even his team is in on it, as they often referred to their plan as “Protect the DoubleLift”, without a doubt he is a vital asset in any team he plays with.
Like we mentioned, he does have the skills that he is so proud of. His mechanics are close to perfect and he is able to pay attention to the whole map while doing his job as an ADC. The map awareness is unbeatable! This means that ganks rarely work on him and he is able to get ahead without much aggression. Right now the two champions he is exceptionally good at are Vayne and Caitlyn. These two require a ton of practice and extensive knowledge of mechanics. But DoubleLift easily manages to pull them off time and time again without much sweat.
Besides these, he also loves trash talking to other players. Including teammates. Thankfully though, this is completely healthy, as it doesn’t come down to simple toxicity like most players end up with. It’s more harmless competitiveness than it is toxicity. We all know that teasing others is part of the fun, which is why DoubleLift is very open to doing this. If you watch him stream then you will quickly notice this tendency. One of his most insulting comments was “I’ll be playing against BoxBox and it will be a good time.” You can probably now see why nobody bats an eye at this kind of trash talking.
Another great quality of his is that he doesn’t rage. He remains calm throughout the game and focuses that energy to play better and win the game. He is very analytical and self aware of what he needs to improve on both in game and personally. If he messes up and it’s just a ranked game then you will likely just see him laugh it off and continue on playing. However, if there’s more on the line you will begin to realize and see it in his demeanor that he is reflecting back on what he needs to improve on almost immediately. This mentality has inspired many rookies that used to get really angry at the game and now a lot of them strive to be relaxed and focused during games to improve. Interesting how a trash talker can have such a positive influence.
DoubleLift Career Highlights
There are a lot of highlights, but the main ones happened during championships, of course. These are mainly team efforts, but we all know how big of a role an ADC plays.
The first one that motivated him to continue happened in 2012. Yes, even before he was a known player. This was a win in the MLG Prizefights 3, where CLGP defeated LgN 2 to 0. It wasn’t a big event, but it’s still worth mentioning, as this was likely the match that set up DoubleLift’s gaming career. In the same year, he also won a couple of other MLG Prizefights games, but this was the first one.
After that comes the big boom in 2015, when he won the NA LCS 2015 Summer Playoffs with CLG. 3 to 0. At the time this was considered a huge achievement and the entire team was very much highlighted in the public eye.
After that, he also won the Summer Split and the Summer Playoffs in both 2016 and 2017 as a part of Team Solo Mid. When 2018 came along he went back to Team Liquid and won the Summer Split, the Summer Playoffs and the Spring Playoffs. This list remained the same in 2019, except Team Liquid also managed to score 1st in the Spring Split.
As for solo games, there is one we can talk about. DoubleLift vs Froggen in the 2015 All-Star Event. If you want to watch the game and not know what happens then skip the rest of this paragraph right now. Alright, so he actually wins the game by a landslide. But of course, there are a lot of highlights in the match, so it’s worth watching. The entire game is very tense and you won’t be able to help yourself from flinching at certain moves.
