Since the minute players wrapped up their playthroughs of Bioshock Infinite, they have been clamoring for the next entry in the Bioshock series. Finally, after years of rumors and false leads, we have an official announcement of a new game in the Bioshock series!
Yesterday morning 2K officially announced that a new Bioshock is being worked on by a brand new studio, Cloud Chamber. They will be working out of California as well as Quebec. Long time developer for 2K Kelly Gilmore (XCOM and Civilization) will take up the role as studio head to help bring this awesome announcement to fruition.
One person that won’t be working on this new game is Ken Levine, the former creative director of the Bioshock games. He is now in charge of his own studio, Ghost Story Games. Ken has become synonymous with Bioshock, like Todd Howard with Bethesda or Phil Spencer and Microsoft. Not having Ken on their team could seriously affect the future of Bioshock. Hopefully, they can get some form of consulting from him, which would show how dedicated Cloud Chamber is to do right by the Bioshock franchise.
I write all this down with the looming thought in the back of my head that this isn’t the first time we were told of a new Bioshock game. As I wrote previously, there has been plenty of rumors in the past, but back in 2018 there were reports by Kotaku that Hangar 13 had begun working on a new Bioshock game. I only remind you of this so that you can remain cautious. Games take a long time to make, and there are more moving parts to them that we won’t ever understand unless you have been a direct part of it.
With the announcement coming just a day ago, it is safe to say that we won’t be seeing this game for a long time. It certainly won’t be coming to current gen consoles, and could possibly miss next gen as well. While that isn’t likely, we should remain cautious, but still optimistic. If you are a fan of Bioshock like myself, you can’t help but be a little irrational when thinking about the possibility of a new game. Bioshock was such a generation defining series for the 360 and PS3 era of video games. If you are making a top games list of that era, chances are 2, if not all 3 of the Bioshock games will make their way on there. We can only hope that this next game in the Bioshock franchise will totally captivate us like the ones that came before it did.
